Xavier University Commemorates 52nd Martial Law Anniversary

On September 23, Xavier University continued its commemoration of the 52nd anniversary of the proclamation of Martial Law with a mass and candle lighting at the XU Immaculate Conception Church.
Fr. Ro Atilano SJ led the mass, reminding the community of the need to remember this dark chapter that has become a vital part of our nation’s history, alongside the memorial of St. Pio of Pietrelcina.
After the mass, student leaders and other members of the community gathered outside the church to hold the candle lighting ceremony in memory of what transpired during Martial Law.

Among the student leaders and students who shared their reflections, Jose Dacanay (AB Philo ‘24) explained why he believed the event needed to be remembered. “The people who suffered are still alive,” Dacanay said, emphasizing that their stories serve as a reminder of the unfinished work and unfulfilled promises during that period, and the need to continue defending one’s right to justice.
Organized by the XU Central Student Government (CSG), CSG Office of the Vice President (CSG OVP), CSG Department of Mission and Social Involvement (CSG DMSI), and DAKILA–Philippine Collective for Modern Heroism, the candle lighting symbolized hope and resilience, reminding attendees that while Martial Law may have ended, the fight for justice continues.
As part of the commemoration, a film screening of Delikado and 11,103 also ensued at AVR 8.
